Visit product page →An unusual looking fruit which dates back to Roman times. Rough-skinned, misshapen, and practically inedible as fresh fruit, the cooked juice of the medlar takes on a rich burgundy colour and the flavour of spiced apples. Picked in November, it is the very last crop to be harvested at Tiptree. The fruit is not ripe until it is bletted, that's when the soft brown pulp can be squeezed from the skin. This complements cold meats and cheese, adds a rich gloss to gravy or is a delicious base for an apple pie.

The trees are as much as 150 years old and some young tree planted recently are expected to bear fruit within 20 years or so. Our ancient Mulberry trees at Tiptree provide a rather erratic crop of this rich and much prized fruit. The delicate berries stain hands when picking which is where the term "caught red handed" originates from, as it's rather obvious if somebody has picked a juicy Mulberry! There is nothing quite like the flavour of Mulberry Jelly. The unique taste of the fruit in the soft texture of the jelly lets it almost melt in your mouth.
